Habakkuk
Chapter 1
1:1The burden, which Habakkuk the Prophet did see.
1:2O YHWH, how long shall I cry,and you will not hear! Even cry out to you for violence, and you will not help!
1:3Why do you show me iniquity, and cause me to behold sorrow? For spoiling, and violence are before me:and there are that raise up strife and contention.
1:4Therefore the Law is dissolved, and judgment does never go forth:for the wicked does compass about the righteous:therefore wrong judgment proceeds.
1:5Behold among the heathen, and regard, and wonder, and marvel:for I will work a work in your days:you will not believe it, though it be told you.
1:6For lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and furious nation, which shall go upon the breadth of the land to possess the dwelling places, that are not theirs.
1:7They are terrible and fearful:their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.
1:8Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the wolves in the evening:and their horsemen are many:and their horsemen shall come from far:they shall fly as the eagle hasting to meat.
1:9They come all to spoil:before their faces shall be a Wind, and they shall gather the captivity, as the sand.
1:10And they shall mock the Kings, and the princes shall be a scorn to them:they shall deride every strong hold:for they shall gather dust, and take it.
1:11Then shall his spirit pass over, and he shall transgress and do wickedly, imputing this their power to their god.
1:12Are You not of old, O YHWH my Elohim, my holy one? We shall not die:O YHWH, You have ordained them for judgment, and O God, you have established them for correction.
1:13You are of pure eyes, and cannot see evil:you cannot behold wickedness:why do you look upon the transgressors, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man, that is more righteous than he?
1:14And make men as the fish of the sea,and as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them.
1:15They take up all with the angle: they catch it in their net, and gather it in their drag, of what they rejoice and are glad.
1:16Therefore they sacrifice to their net,and burn incense to their share, because by them their portion is fat and their meat plenteous.
1:17Shall they therefore stretch out their net and not spare continually to slay the nations?
Chapter 2
2:1I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will look and see what he would say to me,and what I shall answer to him that rebukes me.
2:2And YHWH answered me,and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it.
2:3For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the last it shall speak, and not lie:though it delays, wait:for it shall surely come, and shall not stay.
2:4Behold, he that lifts up himself, his nephesh is not upright in him,but the just shall live by his faith,
2:5Yes, indeed the proud man is as he that transgresses by wine:therefore shall he not endure, because he has enlarged his nephesh as Sheol, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathers to him all nations, and heaps to him all people.
2:6Shall not all these take up a parable against him,and a taunting proverb against him,and say, Ho, he that increases that which is not his? How long? And he that lads himself with thick clay?
2:7Shall they not rise up suddenly, that shall bite you? And awake, that shall stir you? And you shall be their prey?
2:8Because you have spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil you, because of men's blood, and for the wrong done in the land, in the city, and to all that dwell in it.
2:9Ho, he that covets an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, to escape from the power of evil.
2:10You have consulted shame to your own house, by destroying many people, and have sinned against your own nephesh.
2:11For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.
2:12Woe to him that builds a town with blood, and erects a city by iniquity.
2:13Behold, is it not of YHWH of hosts that the people shall labor in the very fire? The people shall even weary themselves for very vanity.
2:14For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of YHWH, as the waters cover the sea.
2:15Woe to him that gives his neighbor drink:you join your heat, and make him drunken also, that you may see their privities.
2:16You are filled with shame for glory:drink also, and be made naked:the cup of YHWH's right hand shall be turned to you,and shameful spewing shall be for your glory.
2:17For the cruelty of Lebanon shall cover you: so shall the spoil of the beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the wrong done in the land, in the city, and to all that dwell in it.
2:18What profits the image? For the maker of it has made it an image, and a teacher of lies, though he that made it, trust in it, when he makes dumb idols.
2:19Woe to him that says to the wood, Awake, and to the dumb stone, Rise up, it shall teach you:behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath in it.
2:20But YHWH is in his holy Temple:let all the earth keep silence before him.
Chapter 3
3:1A prayer of Habakkuk the Prophet for the ignorances.
3:2O YHWH, I have heard Your voice, and was afraid:O YHWH, revive Your work in the midst of the people, in the midst of the years make it known:in wrath remember mercy.
3:3God comes from Teman, and the holy one from mount Paran, Selah. His glory covers the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise,
3:4And his brightness was as the light:he had horns coming out of his hands, and there was the hiding of his power.
3:5Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth before his feet.
3:6He stood and measured the earth:he saw and dissolved the nations and the everlasting mountains were broken, and the ancient hills did bow:his ways are everlasting.
3:7For his iniquity I saw the tents of Cushan, and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
3:8Was YHWH angry against the rivers? Or was your anger against the floods? Or was your wrath against the sea, that you did ride upon your horses? Your chariots brought salvation.
3:9Your bow was manifestly revealed, and the oaths of the tribes were a sure word, Selah. You did cleave the earth with rivers.
3:10The mountains saw you,and they trembled:the stream of the water passed by:the deep made a noise, and lift up his hand on high.
3:11The sun and moon stood still in their habitation:at the light of your arrows they went, and at the bright shining of your spears.
3:12You trod down the land in anger, and did thresh the heathen in displeasure.
3:13You went forth for the salvation of your people, even for salvation with your Anointed:you have wounded the head of the house of the wicked, and discovered the foundations to the neck, Selah.
3:14You did strike through with his own staves the heads of his villages:they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me:their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.
3:15You did walk in the sea with your horses upon the heap of great waters.
3:16When I heard, my belly trembled:my lips shook at the voice:rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble:for when he comes up to the people, he shall destroy them.
3:17For the tree shall not flourish, neither shall fruit be in the vines:the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat:the sheep shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no bullock in the stalls.
3:18But I will rejoice in YHWH:I will joy in the Elohim of my salvation.
3:19YHWH God is my strength:he will make my feet like deer’s feet, and he will make me to walk upon my high places. To the chief singer on Neginothai.
