Jonah
Chapter 1
1:1The word of YHWH came also to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1:2Arise,and go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it:for their wickedness is come up before me.
1:3But Jonah rose up to flee into Tarshish from the presence of YHWH, and went down to Japho: and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare of it, and went down into it, that he might go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of YHWH.
1:4But YHWH sent out a great wind into the sea,and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken.
1:5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his Elohim, and cast the wares that were in the ship, into the sea to lighten it of them:but Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship, and he lay down, and was fast a sleep.
1:6So the shipmaster came to him,and said to him, What mean you, O sleeper? Arise, call upon your Elohim, if so be that Elohim will think upon us,that we perish not.
1:7And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know, for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
1:8Then they said to him, Tell us for whose cause this evil is upon us? What is your occupation? And from where do you come? Which is your country? And of what people are you?
1:9And he answered them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear YHWH Elohim of heaven, which has made the sea,and the dry land.
1:10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Why have you done this? (for the men knew, that he fled from the presence of YHWH, because he had told them)
1:11Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? (for the sea worked and was troublous)
1:12And he said to them, Take me,and cast me into the sea:so shall the sea be calm to you:for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
1:13Nevertheless, the men rowed to bring it to the land, but they could not:for the sea worked, and was troublous against them.
1:14Therefore they cried to YHWH,and said, We ask You, O YHWH, we ask You, let us not perish for this man's nephesh, and do not lay innocent blood upon us:for You, O YHWH, have done, as it pleased You.
1:15So they took up Jonah, and cast him into the sea,and the sea ceased from her raging.
1:16Then the men feared YHWH exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to YHWH,and made vows.
Chapter 2
2:1Now YHWH had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah:and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days, and three nights.
2:2Then Jonah prayed to YHWH his Elohim out of the fish belly,
2:3And said, I cried in my affliction to YHWH,and he heard me:out of the belly of Sheol cried I,and you heard my voice.
2:4For you had cast me into the bottom in the heart of the sea, and the floods compassed me about: all your surges, and all your waves passed over me.
2:5Then I said, I am cast away out of your sight:yet will I look again toward your holy Temple.
2:6The waters compassed me about to the nephesh:the depth closed me round about, and the weeds were wrapped about my head.
2:7I went down to the bottom of the mountains:the earth with her bars was about me forever, yet have You brought up my life from the pit, O YHWH my Elohim.
2:8When my nephesh fainted within me, I remembered YHWH:and my prayer came to you, into your holy Temple.
2:9They that wait upon lying vanities, forsake their own chesed.
2:10But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving, and will pay that that I have vowed:salvation is of YHWH.
2:11And YHWH spoke to the fish, and it cast out Jonah upon the dry land.
Chapter 3
3:1And the word of YHWH came to Jonah the second time, saying,
3:2Arise, go to Nineveh that great city, and preach to it the preaching, which I command you.
3:3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of YHWH:now Nineveh was a great and excellent city of three days journey.
3:4And Jonah began to enter into the city a days journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
3:5So the people of Nineveh believed Elohim, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
3:6For word came to the King of Nineveh, and he rose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him,and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
3:7And he proclaimed and said through Nineveh, (by the counsel of the king and his nobles) saying, Let neither man, nor beast, bullock nor sheep taste anything, neither feed nor drink water.
3:8But let man and beast put on sackcloth, and cry mightily to Elohim:yes, let every man turn from his evil way,and from the wickedness that is in their hands.
3:9Who can tell if Elohim will turn, and repent and turn away from his fierce wrath, that we perish not?
3:10And Elohim saw their works that they turned from their evil ways:and Elohim repented of the evil that he had said that he would do to them, and he did it not.
Chapter 4
4:1Therefore it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
4:2And he prayed to YHWH,and said, please, O YHWH, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I prevented it to flee to Tarshish:for I knew that you are a gracious El,and merciful, slow to anger, and of great chesed, and repent you of the evil.
4:3Therefore now O YHWH, take, I ask You, my nephesh from me:for it is better for me to die than to live.
4:4Then said YHWH, Do you well to be angry?
4:5So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the East side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow till he might see what should be done in the city.
4:6And YHWH Elohim prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head and deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
4:7But Elohim prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day,and it smote the gourd, that it withered.
4:8And when the sun did arise, Elohim prepared also a fervent east wind:and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and his nephesh wished to die,and said, It is better for me to die, than to live.
4:9And Elohim said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry to the death.
4:10Then said YHWH, You have had pity on the gourd for the which you have not labored, neither made it grow, which came up in a night, and perished in a night,
4:11And should not I spare Nineveh that great city, in which are six score thousand persons, that cannot discern between their right hand, and their left hand, and also much cattle?
